One of Mexico's best regional zoos, set in extensive botanical gardens in the UNESCO city of Morelia.
Michoacán's Premier Wildlife Park
Zoológico de Morelia is one of Mexico's finest regional zoos, located in the city of Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded in 1980, the zoo has grown into a well-regarded institution hosting over 200 animal species across spacious, naturalistic habitats.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses an impressive variety of species from Mexico and around the world:
- Big cats – lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards
- Primates – chimpanzees, spider monkeys, and baboons
- Bears – brown bears and spectacled bears (native to South America)
- Giraffes and zebras – popular African species
- Mexican fauna – including coyotes, coatis, and white-tailed deer
- Reptile house – crocodiles, iguanas, and a variety of snakes
- Bird aviaries – toucans, macaws, flamingos, and many more species
Botanical Gardens
The zoo grounds incorporate extensive botanical gardens, with over 2,500 plant species from Michoacán and beyond. The combination of wildlife and horticulture makes a day at Zoológico de Morelia a richly layered experience.
Conservation Programmes
The zoo actively participates in national and international conservation programmes, including breeding efforts for species native to Michoacán. Of particular significance are its programmes for the monarch butterfly — Michoacán is the primary wintering ground of the famous monarch butterfly migration, and the zoo plays a role in education and awareness around this phenomenon.
A Regional Destination
Morelia is a UNESCO World Heritage city, and the zoo is a natural complement to a visit to the colonial city centre. Families from across Michoacán and neighbouring states visit regularly, making it one of the most popular attractions in western Mexico.
