Paraná's Premier Wildlife Park
Zoológico de Curitiba is the main zoological attraction of Curitiba, the capital of Paraná state and one of Brazil's most celebrated cities for urban planning and environmental sustainability. Located in the Parque Regional do Iguaçu, the zoo is embedded within a large natural reserve on the eastern edge of the city.
A Zoo in a Forest Reserve
The zoo's location within the Iguaçu Regional Park — a protected area of subtropical Atlantic Forest — gives it a distinctive character. Animal habitats are integrated into natural forest, and the surrounding park provides an extensive green corridor that supports genuine wildlife conservation in an urban context.
Animal Collection
The zoo houses species from Brazil, South America, and beyond:
- Maned wolves – the iconic long-legged wolf of South America's cerrado
- Giant anteaters – one of Brazil's most recognisable native mammals
- Jaguars and pumas – South America's top predators
- Capybaras – the world's largest rodent, common in southern Brazil
- Tapirs and peccaries
- Brazilian birds – toucans, macaws, harpy eagles, and rheas
- Reptiles – caimans, boas, and South American tortoises
Curitiba's Environmental Ethos
Curitiba is famous as one of the world's most environmentally progressive cities, and the zoo reflects this ethos. Conservation, education, and sustainability are central to its operation. The zoo works closely with Brazilian wildlife agencies on rescue and rehabilitation of animals from Paraná state.
Accessibility
The zoo is easily accessible from central Curitiba by car and public transport. It is a popular destination for school groups from across Paraná and is consistently rated as one of the best free attractions in the city.
