One of the world's largest zoos with over 3,000 animals, the most important zoological institution in South America.
One of the World's Largest Zoos
Zoológico de São Paulo is one of the largest zoos in the world and the most important zoological institution in South America, located in the Ipiranga district of São Paulo, Brazil's largest city. Covering an area of 824,000 square metres within the Atlantic Forest, the zoo was founded in 1958 and houses over 3,000 animals representing more than 400 species.
Extraordinary Scale
The numbers at Zoológico de São Paulo are genuinely staggering. With over 3,000 animals across 400 species, it consistently ranks among the ten largest zoos in the world. The zoo occupies a vast area of preserved Atlantic Forest within the urban fabric of South America's largest metropolis, making it both an ecological sanctuary and a world-class attraction.
Animal Highlights
The collection is comprehensive across all taxonomic groups:
- Big cats – lions, tigers, jaguars, pumas, leopards, and snow leopards
- Great apes – gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans
- Brazilian megafauna – giant anteaters, tapirs, maned wolves, and giant otters
- Reptiles – anacondas, Nile crocodiles, caimans, and Komodo dragons
- Birds – over 600 bird species including the largest bird collection in South America
- Aquatic mammals – sea lions and giant river otters
- Primates – over 20 species of New World monkeys
Conservation Leadership
The zoo is operated by the Fundação Parque Zoológico de São Paulo and is a global leader in conservation of Brazilian and South American species. It runs breeding programmes for dozens of endangered species and houses the largest collection of Atlantic Forest wildlife in captivity.
The Bioparque Experience
In recent years the zoo has been rebranding and upgrading its exhibits under a Bioparque concept, creating larger, more naturalistic habitats that prioritise animal welfare. The transformation is making it one of the most modern major zoos in the Southern Hemisphere.
