Brazil's capital city zoo and the premier showcase of Cerrado biodiversity, with important conservation programmes for maned wolves and giant anteaters.
Brazil's Capital City Zoo
Zoo de Brasília (Jardim Zoológico de Brasília) is the zoological garden of Brasília, the capital of Brazil, located in the Setor de Clubes Sul area of the Federal District. Founded in 1957 — the same year construction of the capital city began — the zoo is one of the most important wildlife institutions in central Brazil, housing a remarkable collection of species from the Cerrado biome, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened savannah ecosystems.
Cerrado Biodiversity Showcase
Brasília sits at the heart of the Brazilian Cerrado — a vast tropical savannah that once covered over 2 million square kilometres of central Brazil. The zoo specialises in Cerrado species, making it the single best place in the world to encounter the wildlife of this extraordinary biome:
- Maned wolves — the iconic long-legged canid, symbol of the Cerrado
- Giant anteaters — one of the most charismatic Cerrado mammals
- Giant armadillos — the largest armadillo species, increasingly rare
- Marsh deer and pampas deer — graceful deer of the Brazilian savannah
- Rheas — the large flightless bird of the Cerrado and Pampas
- Burrowing owls — common Cerrado birds nesting in the ground
- Crab-eating foxes and crab-eating raccoons
- Giant otters and capybaras — from Cerrado waterways
International Species
Beyond Cerrado fauna, the zoo also houses:
- Lions, tigers, and leopards
- Giraffes and hippos
- Primates — chimpanzees and spider monkeys
- Reptile collection — caimans, anacondas, and tortoises
Conservation of the Cerrado
The zoo is a leading institution for Cerrado conservation, working with Brazil's Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente (IBAMA) and international partners on breeding programmes for threatened Cerrado species. The maned wolf breeding programme is one of the most significant in South America.
Modernist Capital Setting
Like all of Brasília, the zoo reflects the city's extraordinary modernist heritage. The layout and architecture of the surrounding area, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, gives Brasília a unique urban character that extends to the zoo's accessible, park-like setting.
