Populariteit

One of the world's largest zoos with over 3,000 animals, the most important zoological institution in South America.

One of the World's Largest Zoos

Zoológico de São Paulo is one of the largest zoos in the world and the most important zoological institution in South America, located in the Ipiranga district of São Paulo, Brazil's largest city. Covering an area of 824,000 square metres within the Atlantic Forest, the zoo was founded in 1958 and houses over 3,000 animals representing more than 400 species.

Extraordinary Scale

The numbers at Zoológico de São Paulo are genuinely staggering. With over 3,000 animals across 400 species, it consistently ranks among the ten largest zoos in the world. The zoo occupies a vast area of preserved Atlantic Forest within the urban fabric of South America's largest metropolis, making it both an ecological sanctuary and a world-class attraction.

Animal Highlights

The collection is comprehensive across all taxonomic groups:

  • Big cats – lions, tigers, jaguars, pumas, leopards, and snow leopards
  • Great apes – gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans
  • Brazilian megafauna – giant anteaters, tapirs, maned wolves, and giant otters
  • Reptiles – anacondas, Nile crocodiles, caimans, and Komodo dragons
  • Birds – over 600 bird species including the largest bird collection in South America
  • Aquatic mammals – sea lions and giant river otters
  • Primates – over 20 species of New World monkeys

Conservation Leadership

The zoo is operated by the Fundação Parque Zoológico de São Paulo and is a global leader in conservation of Brazilian and South American species. It runs breeding programmes for dozens of endangered species and houses the largest collection of Atlantic Forest wildlife in captivity.

The Bioparque Experience

In recent years the zoo has been rebranding and upgrading its exhibits under a Bioparque concept, creating larger, more naturalistic habitats that prioritise animal welfare. The transformation is making it one of the most modern major zoos in the Southern Hemisphere.

Rio de Janeiro's Historic City Zoo

Zoológico do Rio de Janeiro (Rio Zoo) is one of the oldest and most important zoos in Brazil, located in the Quinta da Boa Vista park in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. Founded in 1888 — the same year Brazil abolished slavery — the zoo is housed in the former imperial estate of the Brazilian royal family, giving it one of the most historically significant settings of any zoo in South America.

Imperial Heritage

The zoo occupies the grounds of the Quinta da Boa Vista, the grand estate that served as the main residence of the Brazilian imperial family from the 1840s until the fall of the empire in 1889. The main palace building, an elegant neoclassical structure, still stands in the park and now houses the Museu Nacional do Brasil. Visiting the zoo thus means walking through genuine Brazilian imperial history.

Animal Collection

The zoo houses over 2,000 animals representing more than 350 species, with strong collections across all major groups:

  • Jaguars and pumas — Brazil's native big cats in spacious habitats
  • Giant anteaters, tapirs, and giant armadillos
  • Maned wolves and bush dogs — canids of the Brazilian interior
  • Primates — over 20 species including muriquis, spider monkeys, and golden lion tamarins
  • Golden lion tamarins — one of Brazil's most iconic endangered species, endemic to Rio state
  • Reptiles — anacondas, caimans, and a comprehensive serpentarium
  • Birds — toucans, macaws, harpy eagles, and a large free-flight aviary

Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation

Rio Zoo plays a critical role in the conservation of the golden lion tamarin — a brilliantly orange-furred primate found only in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state. The zoo collaborates with the Golden Lion Tamarin Association on one of the most celebrated conservation success stories in the world, with captive-bred animals released into protected Atlantic Forest fragments.

A Carioca Classic

For Cariocas, the Rio Zoo and Quinta da Boa Vista park are deeply embedded in the city's cultural identity. The park is particularly animated on weekends, when families from the working-class Zona Norte flock to the shaded grounds. Combined with the National Museum and the park itself, a day at Quinta da Boa Vista remains one of Rio's great classic outings.

The World's Finest Bird Park, at Iguaçu Falls

Parque das Aves (Bird Park) is one of the most celebrated bird parks in the world, located in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, directly adjacent to the entrance of Iguaçu National Park — home to the famous Iguaçu Falls. Founded in 1994, the park houses over 1,400 birds representing more than 150 species, almost all native to Brazil and South America.

World-Renowned Bird Collection

Parque das Aves is internationally acclaimed for the quality and diversity of its bird collection. The park's immersive walk-through aviaries are its defining feature — visitors walk directly through large enclosed forest habitats where hundreds of birds fly freely around them.

Highlight species include:

  • Hyacinth macaws – the world's largest macaw species, vibrant cobalt blue
  • Scarlet macaws and blue-and-yellow macaws
  • Toucans and toucanets – seven species including the iconic toco toucan
  • Harpy eagles – one of the world's most powerful raptors
  • Flamingos and roseate spoonbills
  • Harpy eagles, hawk-eagles, and birds of prey
  • Atlantic Forest species – birds found nowhere else on Earth

Walk-Through Aviaries

The park's signature experience is its series of large walk-through aviaries where visitors enter directly into the birds' living space. In the macaw aviary, brilliantly coloured macaws land on visitors' arms. In the toucan aviary, toucans hop between branches overhead. These intimate encounters are what set Parque das Aves apart from any conventional zoo or bird sanctuary.

Conservation Mission

Parque das Aves is deeply committed to conservation of Brazil's threatened bird species, particularly those of the Atlantic Forest — one of the world's most biodiverse and most endangered ecosystems. The park collaborates with Brazilian wildlife authorities on rescue, rehabilitation, and breeding programmes.

Gateway to Iguaçu Falls

Located at the entrance to Iguaçu National Park, Parque das Aves is ideally positioned as either a warm-up to or a finale of a visit to the falls. The combination of the world's most spectacular waterfall system and one of the world's best bird parks makes Foz do Iguaçu one of South America's premier natural tourism destinations.

Zoo de Brasília

Zoo de Brasília

Dierentuin

Brazil's Capital City Zoo

Zoo de Brasília (Jardim Zoológico de Brasília) is the zoological garden of Brasília, the capital of Brazil, located in the Setor de Clubes Sul area of the Federal District. Founded in 1957 — the same year construction of the capital city began — the zoo is one of the most important wildlife institutions in central Brazil, housing a remarkable collection of species from the Cerrado biome, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened savannah ecosystems.

Cerrado Biodiversity Showcase

Brasília sits at the heart of the Brazilian Cerrado — a vast tropical savannah that once covered over 2 million square kilometres of central Brazil. The zoo specialises in Cerrado species, making it the single best place in the world to encounter the wildlife of this extraordinary biome:

  • Maned wolves — the iconic long-legged canid, symbol of the Cerrado
  • Giant anteaters — one of the most charismatic Cerrado mammals
  • Giant armadillos — the largest armadillo species, increasingly rare
  • Marsh deer and pampas deer — graceful deer of the Brazilian savannah
  • Rheas — the large flightless bird of the Cerrado and Pampas
  • Burrowing owls — common Cerrado birds nesting in the ground
  • Crab-eating foxes and crab-eating raccoons
  • Giant otters and capybaras — from Cerrado waterways

International Species

Beyond Cerrado fauna, the zoo also houses:

  • Lions, tigers, and leopards
  • Giraffes and hippos
  • Primates — chimpanzees and spider monkeys
  • Reptile collection — caimans, anacondas, and tortoises

Conservation of the Cerrado

The zoo is a leading institution for Cerrado conservation, working with Brazil's Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente (IBAMA) and international partners on breeding programmes for threatened Cerrado species. The maned wolf breeding programme is one of the most significant in South America.

Modernist Capital Setting

Like all of Brasília, the zoo reflects the city's extraordinary modernist heritage. The layout and architecture of the surrounding area, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa, gives Brasília a unique urban character that extends to the zoo's accessible, park-like setting.
